The Watchword and the Year 2000: An Interview

The awareness that the year 2000 would be a special season for Christ has been growing for some 20 years. The relationship between AD 2000 and the world mission of the church has particularly been highlighted since 1980 by the phrase, "A Church for Every People by the year 2000." On the 15th anniversary of the watchword, this interview was conducted with Jay Gary from his home in Colorado.

Undoubtedly Lausanne II did a masterful job in calling an ever increasingly diverse world of evangelicals to unity in mission as we enter the '90s.

GCOWE 2000: The Meeting of the Century

From January 5-8, 1989, some 300 leaders gathered in Singapore for the "Global Consulation on World Evangelization by AD 2000 and Beyond," or GCOWE 2000 for short. It is now history. The original document, "Kaleidoscopic Global Action Plan," was created by a 15-person working group, chaired by Dr. David Barrett, with me serving as secretary. It was presented to the Global Consultation for consideration. The complete document, revised with the input of the Consultation, was released through New Hope Publishers under the title, Our Globe and How to Reach It, 1990.

"We humbly confess our pride, prejudice, competition and disobedience that have hindered our generation from effectively working at the task of world evangelization." These are among the declarations in a "Great Commission Manifesto" adopted by more than 300 Christian leaders from some 50 countries. Their unanimous vote, in a unison shout of "Amen!" came during the Jan. 5-8 "Global Consultation on World Evangelization by AD 2000 and Beyond" in Singapore.

If recent history tells us anything, the turn of the centuryof the millennium, will galvanize attention around the world. The celebrations surrounding the American bicentennial, in 1976, the commemoration of the signing of the Constitution of the United States, in 1987, the forthcoming five-hundredth anniversary of Columbus's discovery of the New World in 1992: these will pale before the blaze attending the year 2000.
