In Tribute to a Christian Social Engineer

Ralph Winter was a maverick, engineer, and entrepreneur. He was a mentor to me in my early adult life. Yesterday he passed away at age 84 in Pasadena, CA. He was best known as a Christian leader who turned the focus of Evangelical missionary work beyond national borders to unreached peoples.

Last Friday I was shocked to hear that NBC's Meet the Press anchor Tim Russert died of a heart attack. I told my wife, 'Say it isn't so!' I've always enjoyed his political analysis and tough edged interviews. But now after five days of narcissistic coverage on MSNBC, Russert must be turning over in his grave and muttering, 'Say it isn't so!'

It's All Wright?

Yesterday I caught Rev. Jeremiah Wright's speech to the National Press Club. As grounded as Wright appears to be in the prophetic tradition of speaking truth to power, he has fallen from his perch. The question remains, will Obama act as a transformational leader to take us beyond the All-Wright show. Or will presidential leadership on race and diversity now come from Clinton or McCain.
