Get Future Savvy about change
Oct 6, 2008
Why do some business predictions seem to hit the nail on the head while others miss their mark so badly? What do some companies and analysts have that others don't? It is not a crystal ball! I just posted a review on Amazon.com for Future Savvy, an exciting new book which has just reached into their top 100 books on planning and forecasting.

Bike Ride to Work
Aug 12, 2008
I am trying out a new mode of commuting-- riding a bike to work. This past week I bought a "folding" bike and mapped out my route to the university. Yes, it is a short commute, 1.5 miles, but I figure, it will keep me grounded! Street level views are so much more interesting than car views...

The PhD in Futures Studies
Jun 27, 2008
Over the past 50 years, organizational research by academics has buttressed the practice of futures studies and produced many of its strategy approaches, such as environmental scanning and market disruption theory. These breakthrough methods have created a thriving community of practicing and professional futurists. Yet the pursuit to find a disciplinary home for futures studies in the university has lagged. This paper explores how a PhD in Futures Studies, if refocused on theory-building could create anticipatory theories across the social sciences, and buttress the work of a new generation of futurists. This is the premise behind a paper I presented in Sweden to the World Futures Studies Federation, in Sweden.

Say it isn't so
Jun 18, 2008
Last Friday I was shocked to hear that NBC's Meet the Press anchor Tim Russert died of a heart attack. I told my wife, 'Say it isn't so!' I've always enjoyed his political analysis and tough edged interviews. But now after five days of narcissistic coverage on MSNBC, Russert must be turning over in his grave and muttering, 'Say it isn't so!'

The Future According to Jesus
Jun 13, 2008
How did Jesus approach his future? How did the changes of his day impact his horizon? What can we learn from his context that will help us create a more sustainable future? I've been thinking about these questions for some time. Recently Futures journal published a scholarly article I wrote on this subject.

It's All Wright?
Apr 29, 2008
Yesterday I caught Rev. Jeremiah Wright's speech to the National Press Club. As grounded as Wright appears to be in the prophetic tradition of speaking truth to power, he has fallen from his perch. The question remains, will Obama act as a transformational leader to take us beyond the All-Wright show. Or will presidential leadership on race and diversity now come from Clinton or McCain.

A Scoundrel's Guide to Scandal
Sep 26, 2007
Ken Lay, Bernard Ebbers, Scooter Libby, Alberto Gonzalez, Elliot Spitzer. We live in a period of un-authentic leadership, refusing to take accountability for their actions. Speaking from the parable of the dishonest manager, Jay Gary offers Christian leaders three frameworks of the future that can any help any community move from failure to foresight. This speech, 'Framing Christian Futuring,' was given to Bacone College at their Presidential Leadership Summitt.

To Be or Not Be Global?
Oct 15, 2006
My dean and colleague, Dr. Bruce Winston, writes that we have already become global in all we do—day in and day out. Beyond that, global business, not just governments, are now becoming the greater moderators of whether our world makes it through the 21st century. So global leadership is about using principles for both the employee and the organization, that build both markets and communities. If you are interested in leading sustainable enterprises, catch this article.
