Subject: 0.1 WHAT IS TALK 2000? CAN YOU PUT IT SIMPLY?

A place to talk with others about the year 2000 . . . a place in cyberspace to meet others like yourself who want to meaningfully mark the advent of the third millennium in 2001. Talk 2000 is an academic forum for discussion of all aspects of the year 2000, covering its folklore, festivities and future. Talk 2000 is both an electronic mailing list under the technical name, "2000ad-l" and a newsgroup called "bit.listserv.2000ad-l."

Subject: 0.2 EXACTLY HOW DOES TALK 2000 WORK?

You have heard of talk radio, this is talk computer. This online forum is open 24-hours a day. By the end of fall '95, about 300 people had signed up as charter members, representing all kinds of year 2000 interests. Instead of live conversations by telephone, we conduct discussions with each other via email messages. Throughout the day, you receive anywhere from five to ten email messages in your box from Talk 2000. This is not your common variety junk mail, but real letters from real people about real concerns related to the commemorating the millennium in thought as well as action.

Subject: 0.3 HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Hopefully nothing! If you own a computer and a modem, and already have access to some email service like Compuserve, America Online, Prodigy, or the Internet, it's basically free. We say free because Talk 2000 becomes an extension of your own email service.

If you work on a flat rate system, as in America Online or Compuserve, you pay $10/month regardless of how many messages you send or receive. So Talk 2000 won't cost you a penny more than the email service you may already use.

Subject: 0.4 HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE TO THE TALK 2000 FORUM?

The subscription list for Talk 2000 is automatically managed by a software program called a "listproc." When you send the proper email message this subscription address, it "reads" your request and adds your email address to the specified list.

To subscribe to the Talk 2000 forum send an email message to:

LISTPROC@USC.EDU

and put this command in the body of the message:

SUBSCRIBE 2000ad-L <firstname> <lastname>

where <firstname> is your first name and <lastname> is your last name. Drop the brackets < >. The "Subject" line of your message is ignored. Your signature line is not needed.

The computer list processor will automatically read your request, subscribe you on the list and reply back with a welcome letter, which gives you further details.

One convenient feature about Talk 2000 is that it also comes in a digest version. Instead of receiving multiple messages throughout the day as in the regular format, the digest version gathers them up into one collection, and then delivers them to you in a daily journal format, with a table of contents. The welcome letter will give instructions for how to set your subscription to the digest format.

Subject: 0.5 HOW DO I SEND A MESSAGE TO THE LIST?

The Talk 2000 Forum is based on a software program at the University of Southern California which receives your email message and then relays that information to all the addresses on the list. To send a message to participants in the Talk 2000 forum, send your email message to:

mailto:2000ad-L@usc.edu

For your convenience, we encourage you to list this submissions address in your email address book under "Talk 2000."

Talk 2000 is a moderated forum. That means your message is reviewed first by its host, before being posted to the whole group. You are encouraged to post any on-topic message to the Talk 2000 Forum. It might be a comment on media coverage of 2000 you just saw, or a question about the turn of the millennium. Just jump in to create meaningful conversations about the bimillennium.

New participants are encouraged to introduce themselves and their work, tell how they heard about the forum, and what areas of interest they would like to talk about in reference to the year 2000.

Subject: 0.6 WHAT TOPICS DOES TALK 2000 DISCUSS?

Specific topics might include, but not be limited to,
  • alternative scenarios for the year 2000,
  • concepts from bimillennial books,
  • how the millennium influences today's culture,
  • how the media is covering the year 2000,
  • lessons from previous mega-anniversaries,
  • the origin and use of the great calendar-both A.D. & C.E.,
  • proposals for congresses or festivals from 1999 - 2001,
  • updates on various year 2000 organizations, and
  • reflection on what it means to enter the third millennium.

Subject: 0.7 WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR TALK 2000 FORUM COME FROM?

Like most meaningful innovations, Talk 2000 found its roots in a need.
A couple of years ago, an educator in California asked some simple questions of some 40 leaders around the world...
What should the year 2000 mean? Who first proposed that we ought to celebrate the year 2000 as a planning marker and milestone for human achievement? What published documents can give me a window into the conversations behind these calls? Who else do you know that is complementing your preparations for the year 2000? How should my community celebrate the advent of the third millennium?

From governments to public policy groups to the answer came back pure and simple... We know of no current forum that can give that kind of comprehensive information. So a new idea was born.

The task? Find a vehicle that could support conversations from people all around the world who would like to meaningful celebrate the advent of the third millennium.

Subject: 0.8 IN WHAT WAYS MIGHT THE FORUM DEVELOP?

The Talk 2000 Forum is organized both as "2000ad-L," an electronic mailing list hosted by a list processor at the University of Southern California, and a newsgroup, "bit.listserv.2000ad-l" on the Internet.

As the list grows in size from 300, 500 to 1,000, we expect the forum may divide into additional conferences. One companion forum might be called "Threshold 2000." This list would specifically focus on millennialism, its positive and negative history, its imagery and its power today to shape the third millennium. Another spin-off forum might be called "Tribute 2000." This list would specifically focus on how the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Christ is unfolding. The main stem would always be Talk 2000.
