The Key to World Revival
On June 24, 1947, God visited a small group of leaders huddled in a cabin at Forest Home. That night He showed them the key to world revival. That key was none other than reaching tomorrow's world leaders today on the college campus. Henrietta Mears was in that prayer meeting, along with Richard Halverson, Bill Bright and others representing three generations. From this student prayer meeting came the famous College Briefing Conference in August 47 which lit the fuse for the 1947-1949 nationwide revival among youth. After the mid-century revival, God visited the college campus in the early 70s through the Jesus movement. That was the Second Wave. Now is the time for the Third Wave to crest. Until the fall of 1991, this student generation has an unusual opportunity to seek the face of God for revival. A full biblical generation of 40 years has not yet passed since the mid-century awakenings. The God we serve is the Lord of three generations. We must act now to join three generations in the present for God s eternal purpose for the nations. This will strike the heart of the enemies line, as it did in 47 at Forest Home. As campus staff and college pastors, now is the time to partake of the grace which previous generations received in 51, and 71. The student world a faces kairos moment. The appointed time has come (pray through Ps. 102:12-22).
The Decade of Student Evangelism, 1991-2000
Only as revival comes will we be worthy to enter a Decade of Student Evangelism in the fall of 1991. In the 20th Century students came to the forefront of world leadership in the church. They launched the modern missionary movement in 1910, the ecumenical movement in 1920, the evangelical movement in the 1940s, and the charismatic movement in the 1960s. In politics, they stood up to totalitarianism, fascism, unrestrained capitalism, and communism. Not all student activism in this century was good--they marched as Hilter's storm troopers, they plundered China as Mao's Red Guards. There was a down side. But overall, the world is better for students in this Century, as the Revolutions of 1989 demonstrate. Clearly the 20th Century has been the Century of the Student.
In this light, why shouldn't we expect the final Decade of this Student Century to be marked by the greatest Revival among students ever seen in history! What would keep us from seeking the face of the Lord NOW for this kind of revival that would have universal impact? Let us pray now for the dawning of a New Day whose light would reach those 5 million students locked away in the Great Unevangelized Belt.
The Secret of the Year 2000
It is now more true than ever: Perhaps only once in a century does a vision of God come to a student generation large enough to encompass the world. Before we enter this Decade, we need to receive so much from our Lord Jesus Christ. We are blind and need the Lord to put salve in our eyes (read Rev. 3:17-18). There is grace right now for a new student generation to receive--grace that has not been available since 1947 or 1967. The seeds of revival (and organizational renewal) have been sown in our midst. NOW we must pray, write, and speak in such a way that leads students to seek that revival. Only God can release a new generation to join together to enter a new land as we approach a new century. We must seek Him for the advent of this Third Student Wave. We must help a new generation get ready to receive it. This is the meaning of the Year 2000 for this student generation. God wants to give new life now! He stands ready to write a new chapter.
