Compendium Declares New Century Countdown

Rockville, VA The timeclock of the ages has been reset and the countdown to complete world evangelization by AD 2000 is underway.
This declaration is found in the pages of a new book, "The Countdown Has Begun" by Jay and Olgy Gary, coordinators of the newly formed AD 2000 Global Service Office, in Rockville, Va.
"If we don't falter now, AD 2000 could mark the first time in history that Christ's Great Commission is fulfilled worldwide," claim the authors.
The Gary's provide an array of information on existing AD 2000 plans and publications. Since 1987, most of Christianity's biggest denominations have dedicated the years 1991-2000 to world outreach, including the Assemblies of God, Southern Baptists and Roman Catholics.
In much the same way that major radio ministries have recently formed "The World by 2000" program, "Countdown" predicts that numerous mission 'industry-wide' cooperatives will form for research and promotion purposes around the AD 2000 goal as we enter the nineties. In addition, up to 100 country-wide evangelistic strategies could appear, if cooperative efforts gain momentum.
COUNTDOWN subtitle, "The Story of the Global Consultation on AD 2000" reveals its true nature as a compendium of addresses from the recent AD 2000 Consultation in Singapore. Chapter titles include, "The Journey of Cooperation," "Dreaming Together Towards AD 2000," "Cooperation in a Time of Change," "The Spirit is Moving," plus many more.
Besides addresses by Philemon Choi, Ron Cline, Paul Eshleman, Gino Henriques, and Keith Parks, "Countdown" includes significant documents by David Barrett, Luis Bush and Bill O'Brien which preceded and followed-up the Global Consultation.
Another unique aspect of COUNTDOWN is a 14-chapter section of personal reflections by Jay Gary on the people and the events behind the Global Consultation and this unparalleled moment in history.
In this section, Gary explains the genesis of the AD 2000 vision as experienced by different leaders including Keith Parks, Ralph Winter, Thomas Wang and David Barrett.
The Global Consultation on AD 2000 met this past January in Singapore for five days. More than 300 leaders gathered to "hammer out a global evangelistic strategy" for AD 2000 and beyond....
Early reports heralded this event as the "meeting of the century." In a snappy journalistic style, Gary highlights the successes of the Global Consultation, but also points out its shortcomings. Gary states, "Great Commission Christians have not reached the pinnacle, but base camp is now at a higher altitude."
COUNTDOWN quotes David Barrett, mission researcher as saying, "The history of world evangelization is littered with hundreds of well-intentioned plans and pronouncements that aroused interest but came to nothing." Gary claims this history lesson in a nutshell should sober us.
The jury is still out on whether "world evangelization by AD 2000" is a passing fad or an enduring movement, but COUNTDOWN previews the issues behind what could well become the most dramatic decade in church history.
